SPRING studio 19’

patterning the oculus

Project Brief

The basis of this particular project revolves around the Oculus, located in New York City. We were tasked with designing a central kiosk within the Oculus—an inviting space offering light snacks, beverages, while evoking a culturally driven experience that fosters connection.

A key element of the kiosk was to be rooted in a chosen culture, guiding all decisions. Inspired by my heritage, I centered the project around German culture.

When thinking about my overall design concept, I took inspiration from my grandparents. Both came to the United States from Germany at the young age of nineteen. After starting their lives and generating an income, they bought a piece of land in which they would begin to cultivate their lives. This land became a homestead for their family, a place for loved ones to gather, for friends to come together, and for histories to be shaped.

Drawing from that legacy, I envisioned the Oculus as the land and the kiosk as the home—a welcoming retreat from the bustle of New York City. Thus, I branded my kiosk as Homestead to reflect its purpose: offering a sense of peace, warmth, and belonging.

SPATIAL DRAWINGS

The plans highlight the kiosk’s scale in relation to the Oculus, aiming to capture attention without overshadowing its structure. The two forms complement each other, creating a dynamic flow that sparks intrigue.

Positioned at the center of the Oculus, the kiosk offers multiple entry points, allowing users from different sides to experience their own unique journey. This design embraces the Oculus’s many pathways, providing flexibility and enhancing the overall experience.

Interior renderings

To encourage interaction, I focused on creating a welcoming, comfortable space with a warm material palette, incorporating blue, creamy yellow, and crisp white tones.

The design features both horizontal and vertical elements. Horizontal slats are arranged in a woven pattern, reflecting traditional German design, while vertical members offer glimpses into the interior, providing a sense of security. The balance between openness and privacy creates an inviting yet intimate atmosphere.

Diagramming was essential to my design process. The first row illustrates my focus on creating an open structure that allows fluid circulation, enabling visitors to explore freely without being restricted to a single path.

The second row shows my analysis of the site. I began by studying the Oculus and then broke down the specific area I was working with. These diagrams helped me understand the space and clearly communicate the boundaries I was working within.
